Possession: Who Rules the Roost

"Possession" 11x11 watercolor on 140lb ‪#‎Sennellier‬ paper.
Ghana, West Africa. When out for a stroll in this gem of a land, one is struck by many things. The smiling people, their curious gazes at the strangeness of a westerner, the charmingly same-colored-ness of the village buildings (branded red, blue or yellow by regional cellular providers) and the random livestock. Goats and chickens seem to be the most populous domestic wildlings, with the occasional rooster peppered in.
They seem chaotically on the loose and, when one day I asked, "how does anyone knew who these birds belong too? Couldn't we just grab one and have a nice lunch?"
The clear order of their placement was made manifest when someone in our party explained, "everyone knows what animals belong to who. Grab one, and you will very quickly learn who the owner is!"
In this painting, a rooster asserts his possession of a random pile of dirt. A local explained that it was his roost, from which he proudly crowed throughout the day. A fact which he demonstrated shortly after striking this pose. ‪#‎art‬ ‪#‎travel‬ ‪#‎ghana‬ ‪#‎khakum‬ ‪#‎sketchbook‬ ‪#‎watercolor‬ ‪#‎rooster‬
